Spin Kings for a Worthy Cause

While the cricketing world delighted in witnessing the ways and wiles of the game’s best ever spin wizard weave their magic in an enthralling Test series just concluded in Sri Lanka, they both spared a thought for those who were not so fortunate to be able to see them in action.

History’s two most famous spin kings – Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia’s Shane Warne teamed up on the same side to help a worthy cause when they got their team mates to sign two bats to be auctioned to fund the visually handicapped in Sri Lanka.

Soon after the third and final test at the SSC grounds last Sunday, the duo got together to get their respective team mates to sign the bats and presented them to the President of the Sri Lanka Federation of the Visually Handicapped Navaratna Banda.

It was a show of camaraderie by the two teams in helping a worthy cause at the end of the gruelling series.

The live-wire behind the ceremony Ms. Dilhara Fernando a volunteer at the Federation told the Sunday Times that it was Murali who galvanized the two teams to sign the bats and get his spin-twin from Down Under for the presentation ceremony. “Many of our cricketers are involved in humanitarian work, and when I met Murali, and asked him to help the blind, he willingly agreed”, she said. Ms. Fernando also thanked Sri Lanka Cricket for donating the two bats.
